President Murmu paid tribute to Santhal heroes on Hul Diwas

On 30 June 2026, Droupadi Murmu and Narendra Modi paid tribute to the heroes of the Santhal Hul, remembering their courage and sacrifice in defending tribal identity, dignity, and freedom.

  • Hul Diwas is observed every year on 30 June to commemorate the Santhal Hul (Santhal Rebellion) of 1855, one of the earliest organised tribal uprisings against British colonial rule in India.

About the Santhal Hul (1855)

  • The Santhal Hul (Rebellion) began on 30 June 1855 in Bhognadih (Jharkhand).
  • It was led by Sidhu Murmu, Kanhu Murmu, Chand Murmu, Bhairav Murmu, and the courageous sisters Phulo and Jhano.
  • The rebellion was directed against:
    • Exploitative policies of the British East India Company.
    • Oppression by zamindars, moneylenders (mahajans), and revenue officials.
    • Alienation of tribal land and exploitation of the Santhal community.
  • Thousands of Santhals participated in the uprising, which was eventually suppressed by the British through military force.

Significance

  • The Santhal Hul is regarded as one of the earliest and largest tribal resistance movements against British colonial rule.
  • It occupies a significant place in India’s freedom struggle and symbolizes:
    • Resistance against exploitation and injustice.
    • Protection of tribal identity, culture, and land rights.
    • The spirit of courage, sacrifice, and self-rule among India’s tribal communities.

Aftermath

  • In response to the uprising, the British enacted administrative reforms, including the creation of the Santhal Pargana as a separate administrative unit to address tribal grievances and improve governance in the region.
