Why in News?

The Department of Higher Education (GoI) has launched applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026, aimed at attracting accomplished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, technologists, and professionals from across the world to contribute to India’s research and innovation ecosystem.

About the PMRC Scheme

  • A flagship initiative to connect global Indian talent with:
    • Government higher education institutions
    • National laboratories
    • Research centres in India
  • Seeks to strengthen research, innovation, and technological advancement in areas of national importance.

Priority Sectors: The scheme focuses on 13 strategic sectors.  

Three Pillars of the Scheme

  1. Lead Institutions – Coordinate and guide research projects.
  2. Host Institutions – Provide infrastructure and research facilities.
  3. PMRC Fellows – Conduct research aligned with national priorities.

Categories of Fellows

  • Young Research Fellows – Early-career researchers.
  • Senior Research Fellows – Experienced researchers and professionals.
  • Research Chairs – Globally recognized research leaders.

Eligibility

  • Indian citizens working abroad.
  • Overseas Citizen of India cardholders.
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) with distinguished achievements in research, innovation, and technology.

Selection Process

  • Selection of institutions and fellows will be overseen by an Empowered Committee chaired by the Principal Scientific Advisor.
  • The process will focus on excellence, national relevance, and measurable research outcomes.
