Project Him Sarovar Launched to Address Water Scarcity in Ladakh

The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has launched Project Him Sarovar, a major initiative aimed at addressing water scarcity in the cold desert region.

Key Features of the Project

Scientific Snow Harvesting:  The project focuses on scientific snow harvesting and conservation of snowmelt, leveraging Ladakh’s unique climatic conditions where snowfall is a primary water source.

Creation of Water Bodies:

  • Excavation work has begun for the creation of 50 water bodies
  • Implemented simultaneously across Leh and Kargil districts
  • These reservoirs will store meltwater for use during dry periods

Community-Centric Approach:  The initiative emphasizes consultation with local communities, ensuring that water bodies are designed according to regional needs and terrain-specific requirements.

Additional Benefits: Enhancing Green Cover: The project will support plantation drives, especially along roadsides

  • Environmental Sustainability: Aims to improve ecosystem resilience in the fragile Himalayan region

Significance: Ladakh faces acute water shortages due to:

  • Low precipitation and extreme cold desert climate
  • Rapid glacier retreat and climate change impacts
  • Seasonal imbalance in water availability
