Right Livelihood Award 2026

Why in News?

  • The 2026 Right Livelihood Award has been awarded to four individuals/organisations for contributions to AI ethics, human rights, women’s empowerment and social justice.

Winners

  • Timnit Gebru (Ethiopia): Honoured for research on bias in artificial intelligence.
  • Jalila Haider (Pakistan): Recognised as the first female lawyer from the Hazara community for challenging ethnic, state and patriarchal persecution.
  • Rural Women’s Assembly: Represents 178,000+ small-scale farmers across 11 Southern African countries.
  • Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA): Honoured for its work in human rights and rule of law.

About Right Livelihood Award

  • Right Livelihood Award: Established in 1980 by Swedish-German philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull.
  • Often described as an award recognising work in environment, human rights and international development that was not traditionally recognised by the Nobel Prizes.
