Why in News?

The General Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi has announced the selection of 7 eminent personalities as Akademi Fellows (Akademi Ratna), 108 artists for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) 2024–25, and 106 young artists for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2024–25.

Key Highlights

• The Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna) is the highest honour of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and is restricted to only 40 living Fellows at any given time.
• The Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) recognize outstanding contributions in Music, Dance, Theatre, Traditional/Folk/Tribal Arts, Puppetry, Scholarship, and Performing Arts.
• The Akademi has selected 108 artists for the Awards for the years 2024 and 2025.
• A total of 106 young artists have been selected for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for 2024 and 2025.
• The Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards have been conferred annually since 1952.
• The Akademi Fellow (Akademi Ratna) receives ₹3 lakh, along with a Tamrapatra and Angavastram.
• The Akademi Award (Puraskar) carries ₹1 lakh, a Tamrapatra, and an Angavastram.
• The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar carries ₹25,000, along with a Tamrapatra and an Angavastram.
• These honours aim to recognize and promote excellence in India’s rich and diverse performing arts traditions.
