Significance of the Gift Diplomacy

During his recent five-nation diplomatic tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a variety of culturally significant gifts to world leaders from countries including the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway. The gifts highlighted India’s rich cultural heritage, GI-tagged products, folk arts, textiles, handicrafts, and traditional food items. 

Key Highlights of the Gifts

Gifts to Italy

  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received the iconic Indian “Melody” chocolates, which became widely discussed on social media.
  • She was also gifted Assam’s famous Muga silk, a stole inspired by Manipur’s rare Shirui Lily flower.
  • Italy’s President received a handcrafted marble inlay box inspired by Agra’s pietra dura art, recordings celebrating India’s classical music traditions.

Gifts to FAO Chief

  • Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization, received a curated basket of GI-tagged grains and millet products, showcasing India’s agricultural diversity and traditional nutrition practices.

Gifts to Dutch Leaders

  • King Willem-Alexander received Jaipur’s GI-tagged blue pottery.
  • Queen Máxima was gifted meenakari-kundan earrings.
  • Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten received a GI-tagged Madhubani painting featuring a fish motif symbolising harmony and ecological balance.

Gifts to Norwegian Leaders

India presented pressed orchid artwork, floral keepsakes, Kalamkari art, Palm-leaf Pattachitra (from Odisha) creations, highlighting biodiversity and traditional craftsmanship.

Gifts to Sweden

Swedish Prime Minister received works of Rabindranath Tagore, a handcrafted Shantiniketan leather bag, Loktak tea from Manipur and a traditional Ladakh Pashmina stole.

Gifts to Iceland

The President of Iceland received a vibrant Madhubani painting from Bihar, known for its vivid colours, storytelling traditions, and intricate folk motifs.

Gifts to Denmark

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen received the iconic ice axe associated with Tenzing Norgay,  symbolising courage, mountaineering heritage, and adventure. 

Gifts to UAE Leaders

UAE Queen Mother received Chak Hao black rice from Manipur, a Karimnagar filigree silver craft box (Tarkasi, Telangana), Maheshwari silk fabric from Madhya Pradesh. The UAE Crown Prince received a ceremonial dagger featuring intricate Koftgari metalwork. UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan received GI-tagged Kesar mangoes from Gujarat, GI-tagged pineapples from Meghalaya.
