Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM).

Why in News?

The Union Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has received 20 bids under its scheme to promote domestic manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM). The bids were submitted through a global tender on the Central Public Procurement (CPP) portal for establishing integrated neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnet manufacturing facilities in India.

Key Points

The Union Cabinet approved the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM) in November 2025, with a financial outlay of ₹7,280 crore. The Ministry of Heavy Industries notified the scheme in December 2025.

The scheme aims to establish an integrated domestic manufacturing capacity of 6,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of sintered REPMs.

The total capacity will be distributed among five beneficiaries selected through global competitive bidding. Each selected beneficiary will be eligible to establish a capacity of up to 1,200 MTPA.

What are Rare Earth Permanent Magnets?

Rare Earth Permanent Magnets are permanent magnets made using rare-earth elements and are capable of generating strong magnetic fields without requiring a continuous external power supply.

Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets are among the most powerful types of permanent magnets and are particularly important for modern high-technology applications.

These magnets are widely used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, advanced electronics, aerospace systems and defence equipment.
