Sourashtra community

Why in News?

The Digital India BHASHINI Division and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, have developed text-to-speech (TTS) models for Sourashtra, a minority Indo-Aryan language spoken predominantly by the Sourashtra community in Tamil Nadu. The initiative aims to expand speech technology for languages with limited digital resources.

Key Features of the Initiative

  • Text-to-speech technology: Converts written text into spoken language.
  • Language support: The models generate speech in Sourashtra from text written in either Tamil or Sourashtra scripts.
  • Male and female voices: Both voice options are available.
  • Advanced architecture: The models use an end-to-end text-to-speech architecture based on Variational Inference with Adversarial Learning.
  • Digital applications: The technology can support language learning, accessibility solutions, documentation and research.
