A bronze statue of Maharishi Sushruta, revered as the “Father of Surgery,” was unveiled at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.

The statue honours Sushruta’s pioneering contributions to surgery and symbolizes the global recognition of ancient Indian medical knowledge.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by representatives from India and the United Kingdom, along with surgeons, academicians, and healthcare professionals.

About Maharishi Sushruta

Maharishi Sushruta flourished in Kashi (Varanasi) around 600 BCE and is regarded as one of the world’s earliest and greatest surgeons.

His holistic approach to medicine covered Shalya Tantra (surgery), anatomy, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, traumatology, and pharmacology.

His seminal work, the Sushruta Samhita, is one of the foundational texts of Ayurveda and surgery.

The Sushruta Samhita describes more than 1,120 diseases, 120 surgical instruments, and around 300 surgical procedures.

It provides detailed accounts of advanced surgical techniques, including cataract surgery, lithotomy (removal of bladder stones), tumour excision, fracture management, and rhinoplasty (nasal reconstruction).

Sushruta emphasized practical surgical training, recommending practice on fruits, vegetables, animal tissues, and cadavers before operating on patients.

His contributions laid the foundation for modern surgical principles and continue to influence the history of medicine worldwide.
