Tripura Sarinda receives GI tag

Why in News?

Tripura Sarinda, a traditional stringed musical instrument of Tripura, has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The recognition acknowledges its unique craftsmanship, cultural significance and deep association with the indigenous communities of the state.

The Tripura Sarinda is a traditional bowed string instrument widely used in the folk music and cultural performances of Tripura’s indigenous tribes. It is handcrafted by local artisans using wood and other natural materials, with each instrument reflecting generations of indigenous craftsmanship and musical traditions. .

Significance of the GI Tag

The GI recognition will help preserve the authenticity of the Tripura Sarinda by preventing unauthorized imitation and misuse of its name. It is expected to:

  • Safeguard the traditional knowledge and craftsmanship associated with the instrument.

  • Tripura Queen Pineapple
