Tunguska Air Defence Missile System

The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth ₹858 crore to strengthen the country’s air defence and maritime surveillance capabilities. The agreements cover the procurement of the Tunguska Air Defence Missile System and the inspection (Depot Level) of P-8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft.

A major portion of the deal—valued at ₹445 crore—has been signed with JSC Rosoboronexport for the acquisition of upgraded Tunguska systems for the Indian Army.

The Tunguska system is designed as a close-in air defence weapon, combining surface-to-air missiles with twin 30 mm guns. It is specifically tailored to counter low-flying drones and small aerial threats, addressing emerging vulnerabilities in modern warfare.

Defence experts note that such systems complement high-end platforms like the S-400 air defence system, which are optimised for engaging larger and faster targets but may be less effective against smaller, slower-moving drones.

By creating a dense defensive fire envelope, the Tunguska system enhances protection against incoming unmanned aerial systems, significantly boosting short-range air defence capabilities.

The remaining portion of the contract focuses on the maintenance and inspection of the P-8I aircraft, which play a crucial role in India’s maritime reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and surveillance operations.
