Tyler Prize 2024: Johan Rockstrom wins prize for Planetary Boundaries framework

The 2024 Tyler Prize for environmental achievement will be awarded to Johan Rockstrom for his groundbreaking contributions and pioneering work to the development of the Planetary Boundaries framework.

  • Rockstrom is director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and co-chair of the Earth Commission.
  • Rockstrom will receive the award on May 17, 2024, in a ceremony in Potsdam, Germany.
  • The prestigious Tyler Prize is often described as Nobel Prize for the environment.
  • The Planetary Boundaries is an international collaboration across multiple Earth system science disciplines.
  • The planetary boundaries concept presents a set of nine planetary boundaries within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive for generations to come.
  • Crossing boundaries increases the risk of generating large-scale abrupt or irreversible environmental changes.
  • These nine planetary boundaries were first proposed by former centre director Johan Rockström and a group of 28 internationally renowned scientists in 2009.
  • Nine boundaries are: climate change, ocean acidification, stratospheric ozone depletion, biogeochemical flows in the nitrogen (N) cycle, global freshwater use, land system change, the erosion of biosphere integrity, chemical pollution and atmospheric aerosol loading.
