Union Agriculture Minister launches PRAGATI Project

 Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the PRAGATI Project, a new initiative aimed at empowering over 20,000 agricultural entrepreneurs and benefiting nearly 20 lakh farmers across India.

Objective of the Initiative

The PRAGATI (Promoting Rural Agricultural Growth through Agri-Entrepreneurship Initiative) project seeks to:

  • Generate self-employment opportunities for rural youth.
  • Promote modern agricultural practices.
  • Strengthen the connection between farmers, government schemes, and markets.
  • Improve agricultural productivity and rural incomes.

Focus on Agri-Entrepreneurship

  • Under the programme around 20,000 rural youth will be trained as agri-entrepreneurs.
  • Each entrepreneur will work within a village and support 100–200 farmers.
  • They will provide:
    • Technical guidance on improved farming practices.
    • Assistance in accessing government agricultural schemes.
    • Market linkages for better price realization.
    • Support in adopting modern technologies and sustainable farming methods.
  • The project will initially be implemented in eight states which included; Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Rajasthan
  • The PRAGATI Scheme has been introduced to encourage self-employment among rural youth in the agriculture sector while creating a strong network of village-level agricultural service providers.
