Western Dedicated Freight Corridor fully completed

The Ministry of Railways has achieved a major milestone with the completion of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), marking the full commissioning of India’s second Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) had already been completed earlier in October 2023.

Key Highlights

  • The 1,506-km WDFC runs from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal to Dadri.
  • It has been developed in phases by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited.
  • The 1,337-km EDFC stretches from Ludhiana to Sonnagar and is already operational.

New Corridor Proposed

In the Union Budget 2026–27, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed a new Dedicated Freight Corridor connecting Dankuni with Surat, aimed at further strengthening freight connectivity across the country.

Impact on Rail Network

  • The DFCs have diverted freight traffic away from the conventional railway network.
  • This has created additional capacity for running more passenger (coaching) and goods trains.

The initiative is expected to enhance logistics efficiency, reduce transit time, and boost economic growth.
