‘White Rabbit Technology’ Based Network Demonstration

The Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Pralhad Joshi, inaugurated the ‘White Rabbit Technology’-based Indian Standard Time (IST) Distribution Demonstration Network at the Regional Reference Standards Laboratory (RRSL), Jakkur, Bengaluru.

The initiative has been launched under the “One Nation, One Time” vision to establish a uniform, highly precise and secure time synchronization system across India.

The project aims to provide an indigenous and secure source of Indian Standard Time (IST), reducing the country’s dependence on foreign time references such as GPS.

According to the government, the initiative will strengthen the sovereignty of India’s digital infrastructure and protect critical sectors from risks such as cyber-attacks, GPS spoofing, signal disruption and data manipulation.

The system will support high-frequency financial trading, stock exchanges, digital banking and payment systems, telecommunications networks, power grids, data centres, and other critical infrastructure, where precise time synchronization is essential.

The Legal Metrology Division under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution is the nodal agency for implementing the project.

About White Rabbit (WR) Technology

• White Rabbit (WR) is an open-source, Ethernet-based network technology developed by CERN.
• It combines:
  • Precision Time Protocol (PTP – IEEE 1588)
  • Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE)
  • Digital phase detection
    to achieve extremely accurate time synchronization.
• It provides sub-nanosecond (less than one billionth of a second) synchronization accuracy across thousands of connected devices over long distances.
• The technology enables highly reliable and deterministic synchronization for distributed networks.
