World Happiness Report 2026

The World Happiness Report 2026 has been released by the Wellbeing Research Centre in partnership with Gallup, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and an editorial board.

Global Rankings

  • Finland retained its position as the world’s happiest country for the 9th consecutive year, attributed to strong social trust and cooperation.
  • Iceland climbed to 2nd place, followed by Denmark at 3rd, continuing Nordic dominance.
  • Costa Rica emerged as a standout performer, securing 4th place.

India’s Position

  • India ranked 116th out of 147 countries, improving slightly from 118th in 2025.

Bottom Rankings

  • Afghanistan remains the unhappiest country.
  • It is followed by Sierra Leone and Malawi.

Other Key Observations

  • For the second consecutive year, no major English-speaking country entered the top 10:
    • United States – 23rd
    • Canada – 25th
    • United Kingdom – 29th

Social Media Concern: The report highlights that excessive social media use is negatively impacting the well-being of young people, prompting several countries to consider or implement regulatory restrictions.

Methodology: The rankings are based on data from the Gallup World Poll, where respondents evaluate their lives using the Cantril Ladder (scale of 0–10, from worst to best possible life).

Key Determinants of Happiness: Six major factors are used to assess national happiness levels:

  • GDP per capita
  • Life expectancy
  • Social support
  • Freedom to make life choices
  • Generosity
  • Perceptions of corruption
