Why in News?
The Indian Army and the United States Army have commenced the 22nd edition of their annual bilateral military exercise, Yudh Abhyas 2026. The exercise is being conducted from 9 to 28 September 2026 and focuses on enhancing operational interoperability and preparing troops for diverse combat environments.
About Yudh Abhyas 2026
The exercise involves the U.S. Army’s 11th Airborne Division, based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, which has been deployed to India for high-altitude training.
The exercise focuses on high-altitude warfare, long-range precision fires, counter-drone capabilities and operational interoperability between the two armies.
The exercise began at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges near Bikaner, Rajasthan, before the contingents move to Auli in Uttarakhand, located approximately 95 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
The two-phase format exposes the participating troops to contrasting operational environments. The western desert phase provides training in open manoeuvre operations and long-range fires, while the Himalayan phase focuses on high-altitude terrain, extreme environmental conditions and logistical constraints.
