12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the national celebration of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on 21 June 2026. The event was held at the historic Red Road, Kolkata, West Bengal.

Theme 2026: “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”

Key Highlights

  • The Prime Minister led the national observance by performing the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) along with thousands of participants.
  • The celebration underscored the importance of yoga in promoting preventive healthcare, physical fitness, mental well-being, and healthy ageing.
  • The event witnessed mass public participation, reflecting yoga’s growing acceptance as a global wellness practice.

International Day of Yoga (IDY) 

  • On 11 December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga through Resolution 69/131.
  • The resolution was proposed by India and received the support of a record 175 Member States, making it one of the most widely endorsed UNGA resolutions in history.
  • The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address at the opening of the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Why 21 June?

  • 21 June is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • It holds special significance in yogic traditions and symbolizes harmony between nature and human well-being.

Objectives

  • To raise global awareness about the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of practising yoga.
  • To promote healthy lifestyles and preventive healthcare.
  • To encourage holistic well-being and sustainable living.
  • To foster global unity, peace, and harmony through yoga.
