Commissioning of INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi commissioned three frontline naval platforms into the Indian Navy in Kolkata, West Bengal, on 21 June 2026:

  • INS Dunagiri – Advanced Stealth Frigate
  • INS Sanshodhak – Survey Vessel (Large)
  • INS Agray – Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC)

The induction of these platforms strengthens India’s maritime security, surveillance, and indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. 

About INS Dunagiri: 

  • Fifth Nilgiri-class stealth frigate under Project 17A.
  • Second ship of the class built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
  • Named after the earlier INS Dunagiri, symbolising continuity in India’s naval legacy.
  • Built using modular construction technology.
  • Equipped with:
    • Supersonic surface-to-surface missiles.
    • Advanced air defence systems.
    • Medium Range (MR) Gun.
    • Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS).
    • Advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities.
  • Designed for high-end multi-dimensional naval operations.
  • Enhances the Indian Navy’s blue-water combat capability.
  • Strengthens indigenous warship design and shipbuilding under Project 17A.
  • Improves maritime deterrence and operational readiness.

About INS Sanshodhak 

  • Fourth Survey Vessel (Large) class ship.
  • Designed for hydrographic and oceanographic surveys.
  • Equipped with:
    • Advanced hydrographic and oceanographic survey systems.
    • Four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs).
  • Powered by twin diesel engines with an advanced platform management system.
  • Capable of operating across India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
  • Features dual-role capability:
    • Hospital Ship.
    • Helicopter operations.
  • Hydrographic mapping.
  • Oceanographic data collection.
  • Coastal and offshore development support.
  • Navigation safety.
  • Marine resource assessment.
  • Promotes sustainable utilisation of ocean resources.
  • Supports India’s Blue Economy initiatives.
  • Contributes to the vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).
  • Enhances maritime domain awareness.

About INS Agray

  • Fifth vessel in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) series.
  • Specially designed for anti-submarine operations in shallow coastal waters.
  • Equipped with:
    • Advanced Sonar systems.
    • Torpedoes.
    • Anti-Submarine Rockets.
    • Combat Management System (CMS).
  • Powered by waterjet propulsion for enhanced agility.
  • Optimised for operations in littoral (near-shore) waters.
  • Strengthens coastal defence against submarine threats.
  • Enhances underwater surveillance and engagement capabilities.
  • Improves India’s anti-submarine warfare preparedness in coastal and shallow-water environments.
