Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA)

The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) has expanded from its initial focus on 272 vulnerable districts to become a nationwide campaign against substance abuse.

Launched on 15 August 2020 by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the campaign has reached more than 23 crore people across the country.

According to the Ministry, the campaign has engaged:

  • More than 7.81 crore youth
  • Over 5.24 crore women
  • Around 17 lakh educational institutions
through awareness and outreach programmes on the harmful effects of drug abuse.

The campaign aims to create awareness about substance abuse, promote preventive education, encourage community participation, and build a drug-free society.

The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan adopts a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, bringing together multiple stakeholders, including:

  • Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB)
  • State and district administrations
  • Police authorities
  • Hospitals and healthcare institutions
  • Non-governmental organisations (NGOs)

The campaign also promotes the NMBA Pledge, through which citizens commit to:

  • Staying away from drugs.
  • Supporting individuals affected by addiction.
  • Contributing to the creation of a drug-free India through collective action and community participation.

The initiative aligns with the Government’s broader objective of drug demand reduction, rehabilitation of persons affected by substance abuse, and fostering a healthier and more productive society.
