Handloom Hackathon 2026

The Union Ministry of Textiles has launched the Handloom Hackathon 2026, a national innovation challenge aimed at leveraging technology, design, entrepreneurship, and sustainable solutions to strengthen India’s handloom sector.

  • The initiative has been organised as part of the celebrations of National Handloom Day 2026.
  • The grand finale of the Hackathon will be held on 1 August 2026 at the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi, where shortlisted teams will present their innovative solutions before an eminent jury.
  • The Handloom Hackathon 2026 seeks to bring together the creativity and innovation of India’s youth with the country’s rich handloom heritage, encouraging solutions that improve productivity, market access, sustainability, and livelihoods of handloom artisans.

National Handloom Day

  • National Handloom Day is observed every year on 7 August to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, which was launched on 7 August 1905.
  • The Swadeshi Movement encouraged the use of indigenous products and played a significant role in promoting India’s handloom industry and traditional weavers during the freedom struggle.
  • In 2015, the Government of India declared 7 August as National Handloom Day to honour India’s handloom weavers and promote the sector.
  • The first National Handloom Day was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 7 August 2015 in Chennai.
