A gender gap of 10% in Jan Dhan account application

  • According to a World Bank paper titled, ‘Making It Easier to Apply for a Bank Account: A Study of the Indian Market’, a 10% gender gap was reported in opening accounts under the Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Jan Dhan Yojana’.
  • Under this scheme 73% men and 63% women applied for account opening.
  • Among the states, Madhya Pradesh recorded the largest gender gap of 21%.
  • Even at income level, 64% poorer adults and 71% richer adults applied for an account.
  • The share of wage earners (72%) was higher than the share of adults who are out of the workforce and applied for an account (64%).
  • Among adults with primary school education, 62% applied as compared with 70% of adults who had completed secondary school education .
  • The world bank survey was carried out between January and March of 2016 in 12 States; Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana), Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthann and Uttar Pradesh.

About Prime Minister Jan Dhan Scheme

  • This scheme was started on 26 August, 2014.
  • The scheme provide life cover of Rs. 30,000/- payable on death of the beneficiary, subject to fulfillment of the eligibility condition.
  • This scheme also provide rupay debit card as well as accidental insurance cover of Rs. 1 lac
  • Such accounts have limitations regarding the aggregate credits (not more than Rupees one lakh in a year), aggregate withdrawals (nor more than Rupees ten thousand in a month) and balance in the accounts (not more than Rupees fifty thousand at any point of time).
  • After satisfactory operation of the account for 6 months, an overdraft facility is provided.
  • It created the Guinness World Records by opening 18,096,130 bank accounts in a week (23-29 August, 2014)
