Why in News?

The Indian Army is establishing six AASHVAST labs across the country to conduct mandatory security inspections of its drones and, eventually, CCTV cameras. The initiative aims to identify and eliminate firmware-level vulnerabilities in electronic systems and reduce the risk of equipment failure or compromise during operations in contested environments.

About AASHVAST

AASHVAST stands for Assessment and Analysis of Electronic Systems Hardware for Vulnerabilities and Security Threats. It is a Firmware Analysis and Validation Suite developed by QuickPay Pvt Ltd for the Directorate General of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (DG EME).

The system goes beyond physical inspection of drones by analysing the firmware and software that control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It is designed to detect security vulnerabilities at the firmware level and help ensure that drones function reliably and securely during military operations.

One AASHVAST laboratory has already been inaugurated in Delhi, with at least five more planned across the country.
