Balendra Shah Sworn in as Nepal’s Youngest Democratically Elected Prime Minister

Balendra Shah, parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), was sworn in as Nepal’s Prime Minister on Thursday, becoming the country’s youngest head of government at the age of 35.

He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ramchandra Paudel at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas.

Shah is the 47th Prime Minister of Nepal and was appointed in accordance with Article 76(1) of the Constitution.

His swearing-in marks a significant political development, as he becomes the first democratically elected Prime Minister since the coalition government led by former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli was ousted in September 2025.

The previous government fell following widespread youth-led Gen Z protests against corruption, nepotism, and a controversial social media ban, which eventually escalated into violence.
