Bengal fox

The Bengal fox, also known as the Indian fox, is one of India’s most widespread native canids. It was recently in the news due to habitat loss.

About Bengal fox

It is found across much of India, from the Himalayan foothills to southern India.

The species prefers open habitats such as grasslands, thorn scrub, semi-arid plains, dry deciduous forests, semi-deserts, and agricultural landscapes.

The Bengal fox is a small-sized fox, with males being slightly larger than females.

Its coat colour varies from reddish-grey to silvery-grey, depending on the season and habitat.

Unlike many other fox species, the Bengal fox often lives in pairs or small family groups, indicating stronger social behaviour.

It is omnivorous, feeding on rodents, insects, reptiles, birds, fruits, and other small animals.

Major threats include habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and urbanisation, hunting, and degradation of grassland ecosystems.

Conservation Status (IUCN): Least Concern (LC).

The Bengal fox plays an important ecological role by controlling rodent populations and maintaining the health of grassland ecosystems.
