What is Gait analysis?

Gait analysis was recently in the news after investigators in a high-profile murder case in Pune, Maharashtra, decided to compare the walking pattern of an accused with CCTV footage from the crime scene to help establish identity.

  • Gait analysis is the scientific study of the way a person walks or runs.
  • It examines the coordinated movement of muscles, bones, joints, and the nervous system during walking or running.
  • Every individual has a unique gait pattern, influenced by factors such as body structure, posture, limb movement, and walking rhythm.
  • Forensic gait analysis involves comparing the gait of a suspect with the gait of a person captured in CCTV footage or other video evidence.
  • It is used for criminal investigation and personal identification, particularly when:
    • The suspect’s face is concealed.
    • Facial recognition is not possible.
    • DNA or fingerprint evidence is unavailable or inconclusive.
