Bhote Koshi River Flash Flood

Why in News?

The Bhote Koshi River in Nepal experienced a devastating flash flood on 26 August 2026, particularly affecting Rasuwa district near the Nepal–Tibet (China) border. More than 100 people were reportedly killed, with several others missing.

Main Points

• Origin: The Bhote Koshi originates from the Zhangzangbo Glacier in Tibet, China.
• Chinese name: It is known as Poiqu/Boqu in China.
• Lende Khola: A tributary of the Bhote Koshi River.
• The Bhote Koshi forms part of the larger Saptakoshi (Koshi) river system.
• Koshi River Basin: The river system originates in the Tibetan Plateau, flows through Nepal and India, and ultimately drains into the Ganga in Bihar.
