2026 Nepal Flash Flood and Possible Causes

Why in News?

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a catastrophic glacial collapse and debris flow occurred on 26 August 2026 in Langtang National Park, Nepal, near the China border. The resulting flood and debris travelled nearly 100 km downstream, severely affecting settlements and infrastructure along the Lende Khola and Trishuli Khola river systems, including the Rasuwagadhi border post.

What is Glacial Collapse?

A glacial collapse occurs when a glacier or a portion of it suddenly disintegrates or fails, potentially releasing huge quantities of ice, rock, water and sediment. Such events can trigger sudden floods and destructive debris flows downstream.
