BRICS Agriculture Ministers adopt Indore Joint Declaration

The 16th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting concluded in Indore on June 13, 2026. The meeting was held under India’s BRICS Presidency on June 12–13, 2026.

  • BRICS member countries unanimously adopted a Joint Declaration outlining a roadmap for:
    • Food security
    • Sustainable agriculture
    • Agricultural innovation
    • Farmer welfare

Key Highlights of the Joint Declaration

  • Emphasis on building resilient agricultural systems through innovation, sustainability and inclusive development.
  • Recognition of the crucial role of farmers, particularly smallholders, in ensuring food security and rural development.
  • Adoption of a farmer-centric approach to agricultural cooperation.

BRICS Network of Centres of Excellence on Agroecology and Regenerative Agriculture

  • BRICS nations agreed to establish the BRICS Network of Centres of Excellence on Agroecology and Regenerative Agriculture.
  • The initiative will initially be coordinated by the ICAR–Indian Institute of Farming System Research (IIFSR).
  • IIFSR will serve as India’s Centre of Excellence on Natural Farming.

BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture

  • Member countries approved the creation of a BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture.
  • Focus areas include:
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    • Geospatial technologies
    • Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)
    • Data-driven agricultural solutions
  • The initiative will initially be coordinated by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

Global Forum on Farmers’ Rights in Seed Systems

  • Ministers approved the launch of the Global Forum on Farmers’ Rights in Seed Systems.
  • It will initially be coordinated by the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPV&FRA).
  • The forum will focus on:
    • Protecting farmers’ rights
    • Preserving traditional knowledge
    • Promoting seed heritage
    • Recognising farmers’ contributions to seed systems

BRICS AGRIN Framework

  • BRICS countries agreed to establish the BRICS AGRIN (Agro-Inputs, Genetic Resources and Information Network).
  • The framework aims to strengthen cooperation in:
    • Agro-inputs
    • Genetic resources
    • Agricultural information sharing.
