Border Roads Organisation’s Project Deepak celebrated its 66th Raising Day on 4 May 2026 at Shimla. 

About Project Deepak

  • One of the oldest and most significant projects of BRO.
  • Raised in 1961 to develop and maintain strategic road infrastructure in the Western Himalayas.
  • Operates in key districts of Himachal Pradesh such as Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti.

Key Contributions

  • Development of over 1,100 km of road network in high-altitude and border regions.
  • Construction and maintenance of the historic Hindustan Tibet Road.
  • Development of key stretches along the Manali Leh Highway axis.
  • Ensures connectivity in some of the most difficult terrains in India.

Significance

  • Strengthens defence preparedness by maintaining vital lines of communication near border areas.
  • Enhances strategic mobility of armed forces in high-altitude regions.
  • Boosts socio-economic development and connectivity for remote Himalayan communities.
