Anne Carson was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1950. She has served as a professor of classics at institutions including Princeton University, New York University and McGill University in Montreal.

Her first book, Eros the Bittersweet, was published in 1986 and explores desire through literary criticism and ancient Greek traditions.
