Centre constitutes high-level committee to address demographic changes

The Government of India has constituted a high-level committee to examine the challenges arising from demographic changes caused by infiltration and other factors.

Committee to be Headed by Justice P. P. Naolekar

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced through a social media post that the committee will be chaired by Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India.

The committee will also include the Census Commissioner, former IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, former IPS officer Balaji Srivastava, and economist Shamika Ravi as members. The Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I) in the Ministry of Home Affairs will serve as the Member Secretary of the committee.

Focus on National Security and Social Stability

The Home Minister stated that demographic change is a serious issue connected not only with sovereignty but also with national security, law and order, social structure, and the preservation of tribal society.

Mandate of the Committee

The committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment of demographic changes taking place across India due to illegal immigration and other unnatural causes.

It will also study patterns of abnormal population shifts among different religious and social communities. Based on its findings, the committee will recommend planned and time-bound solutions to address these concerns.

Objective of the Initiative

The initiative aims to provide a structured policy response to demographic challenges and strengthen administrative preparedness in matters related to internal security, social harmony, and population management.
