Government Notifies National Sports Governance Board Rules and National Sports Tribunal Rules, 2026

The Government of India has notified the National Sports Governance (National Sports Board) Rules, 2026 and the National Sports Governance (National Sports Tribunal) Rules, 2026 to strengthen transparency, accountability, and dispute resolution in the country’s sports administration framework.

National Sports Board: Composition and Role

Under the new rules, the National Sports Board will consist of a Chairperson and two Members. They will be appointed by the Central Government from a panel of names recommended by a Search-cum-Selection Committee.

The Rules define the composition of the Board, tenure of office, salaries, allowances, service conditions, and the powers and functions of the Board.

The National Sports Board will function as the central authority responsible for granting recognition to National Sports Bodies. It will also monitor compliance with governance standards, financial accountability, and ethical practices in sports administration.

Establishment of National Sports Tribunal

The National Sports Tribunal has been created as a dedicated adjudicatory body for resolving sports-related disputes in India. The objective is to reduce dependence on civil courts and ensure speedy, independent, effective, and cost-efficient disposal of disputes linked to sports governance and administration.

The Tribunal is expected to provide a single-window mechanism for quicker and more accessible settlement of sports disputes while also reducing multiple litigations.

The Tribunal will include a Chairperson, who must be a sitting or former judge of the Supreme Court of India or a High Court, along with two eminent members having expertise in sports, law, or public administration.

The Chairperson will hold office for a term of five years or until attaining the age of seventy years, whichever is earlier. The Members will serve for five years or until the age of sixty-seven years, whichever is earlier.
