Cerium-Magnesium Changesite

China has announced the discovery of a new mineral from the Moon, adding to the growing catalogue of extraterrestrial materials and advancing understanding of lunar geology.

11th Known Lunar Mineral Identified

According to the China Geological Survey:

  • Scientists have identified the 11th known lunar mineral
  • The mineral has been named Cerium-Magnesium Changesite
  • It was discovered in a lunar meteorite, the first such find to have fallen within China.

Unique Characteristics

Despite its microscopic size, the mineral has notable properties:

  • Grain size ranges between 3 to 25 micrometres
  • Most particles are under 10 micrometres
  • Possesses unique chemical and structural features

Fluorescent Property and Applications

One of its most striking features is fluorescence—the ability to emit light under certain conditions.

  • This property may have practical applications in advanced technologies

Potential use in developing next-generation LED materials.
