Guntur Municipal Corporation wins UNIDO’s 4th Gender Equality Mobilisation Award

 The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has secured the 4th Gender Equality Mobilisation (GEM) Award, presented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The award was conferred during the International Day of Women in Industry 2026 celebrations in Vienna on April 22, 2026. 

Recognition for Women-Centric Green Initiative

GMC was recognised for its innovative initiative combining women’s empowerment with environmental sustainability. Over 200 women from informal waste collection backgrounds were identified and trained, employed as electric auto drivers for door-to-door garbage collection.  

Sustainable Cities Programme

The initiative is part of the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SCIAP):

  • Promotes zero-emission waste management
  • Integrates women into the green economy
  • Supports inclusive and sustainable urban development

Additional AchievementsThe Guntur Municipal Corporation has also received state-level recognition for its strong performance in property tax collection during the 2025–26 financial year.
