Credit Risk-o-Meter

Why in News?

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has introduced a Credit Risk-o-Meter as a mandatory disclosure mechanism to help investors assess the credit risk associated with debt securities before investing. The colour-coded indicator aims to improve transparency and support informed investment decisions.

About the Credit Risk-o-Meter

The Credit Risk-o-Meter is a visual risk indicator designed to communicate the level of credit risk associated with debt securities. Credit risk refers to the possibility that an issuer may fail to make interest payments or repay the principal amount as promised.

Under SEBI’s new provisions, the indicator must be displayed in offer documents, abridged prospectuses, private placement memorandums and advertisements issued by securities issuers and Online Bond Platform Providers (OBPPs). It must also be displayed on OBPP websites and mobile platforms.

The measure will enable investors to identify credit-risk information more easily when comparing investment opportunities. However, it does not eliminate the possibility of default or guarantee returns.

Implementation

The new provisions will come into effect 45 days from the date of SEBI’s circular. Stock exchanges and depositories have been directed to establish the necessary systems and processes to implement the disclosure requirements.
