Hidimba Temple

Why in News?

President Droupadi Murmu visited the historic Hidimba Temple in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, on the second day of her visit to the state. The temple is known for its distinctive pagoda-style architecture and its association with the Mahabharata.

About Hidimba Temple

Hidimba Temple is located in Manali village and is surrounded by tall deodar trees. Dedicated to Hidimba, the wife of Pandava prince Bhima, the temple features a distinctive four-tiered pagoda-style design and holds religious and cultural significance in the Kullu region.

Hidimba is revered as a goddess in the religious traditions of Kullu and is regarded as the grandmother of the Kullu royal family. Her deification is traditionally associated with Manali.

Mythological Significance

According to the Mahabharata, during the Pandavas’ exile, Hidimba encountered Bhima and fell in love with him. Her brother Hidimb opposed her decision not to harm the Pandavas and attacked them. Bhima killed Hidimb in the ensuing battle, after which Bhima and Hidimba married with Kunti’s permission.

Their son, Ghatotkacha, later fought in the Mahabharata war and became known for his bravery. Hidimba was subsequently worshipped as a goddess, becoming an important figure in the local religious traditions of Manali and Kullu.
