Question: What is the ‘Sonic Boom’, which was in the news recently?
(a) A NASA spacecraft
(b) Sound produced by submarine while going undersea
(c) The sound effect caused due to aircraft flying faster than the speed of sound
(d) The sound effect caused due to aircraft flying faster than the speed of wind
Answer: c
The ‘loud sound’ heard in Bengaluru on May 20, 2020 afternoon, which puzzled lakhs of city dwellers, was revealed to have emanated from an IAF test flight involving a supersonic profile. The sound effect caused due to such high-speed flights is known as ‘sonic boom’. In a statement, the Ministry of Defence’s PRO in Bengaluru said, “The sonic boom was probably heard while the aircraft was decelerating from supersonic to subsonic speed between 36,000 and 40000 feet altitude.” It confirmed that the aircraft belonged to the Aircraft Systems and Testing Establishment (ASTE) and had flown in allocated airspace outside city limits. According to the NASA, a sonic boom is a thunder-like noise a person on the ground hears when an aircraft or other type of aerospace vehicle flies overhead faster than the speed of sound, or “supersonic.” Air reacts like fluid to supersonic objects. As those objects travel through the air, molecules are pushed aside with great force and this forms a shock wave, much like a boat creates a wake in water. The bigger and heavier the aircraft, the more air it displaces.
