Cyclosporiasis outbreak in USA

A case of Cyclospora infection in the United States has drawn attention after a woman reportedly suffered severe diarrhoea, requiring nearly 30 visits to the bathroom each day.

About Cyclospora

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis (cyclosporiasis).

The parasite infects the small intestine and commonly causes watery diarrhoea, frequent bowel movements, abdominal cramps, nausea, fatigue, dehydration and, in severe cases, hospitalization.

Humans become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with Cyclospora. Fresh produce such as leafy vegetables, herbs and berries are common sources during outbreaks.

Cyclospora is believed to infect only humans and is transmitted through human faecal contamination of food or water.

Unlike many other intestinal pathogens, Cyclospora is not usually transmitted directly from person to person, as the parasite requires several days to weeks outside the human body after being excreted in faeces before it becomes infectious.
