Falkland Islands/Las Malvinas Controversy

Argentina’s victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final has sparked a diplomatic controversy after players Lautaro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso celebrated with a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falkland Islands are Argentine”).

The United Kingdom has urged FIFA to investigate how the banner entered Atlanta Stadium, as Argentina supporters had reportedly been prohibited from carrying Falklands-related flags into the match.

Under FIFA’s disciplinary code, the display of political, ideological or offensive messages during official matches or celebrations can attract sanctions, including fines or player suspensions.

About the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)

  • The Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) are an archipelago located in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf, about 500 km east of Argentina’s coast.
  • The islands consist of East Falkland, West Falkland, and over 700 smaller islands.
  • They are currently administered by the United Kingdom as a British Overseas Territory.

Why are the Falkland Islands disputed?

  • The sovereignty dispute dates back to 1833, when Britain reasserted control over the islands.
  • Argentina claims it inherited sovereignty over the islands from Spain after gaining independence in 1816, and therefore considers British control to be illegal.
  • The dispute escalated into the 1982 Falklands War, a 74-day conflict in which 649 Argentine and 255 British personnel were killed.
  • Britain retained control after the war.

Current Status

  • In a 2013 referendum, an overwhelming majority of the islands’ residents voted to remain a British Overseas Territory.
  • The United Kingdom cites the principle of self-determination in support of its administration.
  • Argentina, however, continues to assert its sovereignty over the islands and considers the Malvinas an integral part of its national territory and identity.
