Dhokra Craft

Why in News?

At the 8th PM Mementos exhibition, a collection of 16 mementos from Chhattisgarh highlighted the state’s tribal heritage, devotional traditions and contemporary cultural identity. The collection featured Dhokra, an ancient metal-casting craft with a history of more than 4,000 years in India.

About Dhokra Craft

Dhokra is a traditional metal-casting craft that uses the lost-wax technique to create decorative and utility objects. The craft is known for its distinctive antique appearance and intricate wire-work finish.

The process involves shaping beeswax into fine designs, covering the wax model with a mould, and heating it so that the wax melts away. Molten metal is then poured into the cavity to create the final object.

Dhokra products traditionally use brass and may incorporate other metals, depending on the technique and composition. Common designs include human figures, animals, tribal couples, containers, boxes, lamps, lampstands and tabletop decorations.

The Chhattisgarh collection included an Elephant Head Nandi, Standing Nandi and Madia-Madin Tribal Couple Bust, showcasing the craft’s connection with tribal culture and devotional traditions.
