Diamondiyne-A New form of carbon discovered

Why in News?

Scientists from Sweden have successfully synthesised diamondiyne, a porous, three-dimensional carbon material proposed theoretically around 35 years ago.

– Structure: It consists of diamond-like tetrahedral structures linked by strong carbon–carbon triple bonds, creating a porous framework.

– Synthesis: Researchers used a controlled chemical reaction at the interface between two liquids, without requiring the high pressure used to form conventional diamond.

– Significance: Diamondiyne is the second known carbon allotrope, after diamond, with covalent bonds extending in all three dimensions.

– Potential Applications: Its properties are still being investigated; future applications in advanced materials and technology remain possible.

Carbon allotropes are different structural forms of the same element. Examples include diamond, graphite, graphene, fullerenes and carbon nanotubes.
