Dimethyl Ether (DME) technology

the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) has developed an innovative Dimethyl Ether (DME) production technology that can be blended with LPG and used as a cleaner alternative fuel.

Breakthrough in Indigenous Technology

The research team led by T Raja, Chief Scientist at the Catalysis Division, has created a patent-protected process for producing DME.

  • Uses an indigenously developed, cost-effective catalyst
  • Enables efficient conversion of methanol into DME
  • Improves both material design (catalyst) and engineering process

What is DME and Why It Matters

Dimethyl Ether (DME) is emerging as a clean-burning, eco-friendly fuel with multiple advantages:

  • Can be produced domestically from:
    • Methanol
    • Coal
    • Biomass (agricultural waste)
    • Captured carbon dioxide
  • Produces lower emissions compared to conventional fuels
  • Can be blended with LPG and used in household stoves with minimal or no modification

Successful Testing and Application

The blending of DME with LPG has already been tested successfully by CSIR-NCL in collaboration with the LPG Equipment Research Centre.
This makes it a practical and scalable solution for India’s cooking fuel needs.

Reducing Import Dependence

Currently, India imports a significant amount of methanol from countries like Iran, which can pose supply risks.

However, scientists highlight that:

  • Methanol can be produced domestically from coal, biomass, and CO₂
  • This strengthens energy security and supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision

How DME is Produced

The production process involves multiple steps:

  1. Methane (from natural gas or renewable sources) is used as the starting point
  2. Converted into syngas (carbon monoxide + hydrogen)
  3. Syngas is converted into methanol
  4. Methanol is then converted into DME using the new catalyst

This flexible pathway allows both fossil-based and renewable inputs, making DME a future-ready fuel.
