Unseasonal Weather Swings Across India in March 2026

After an unusually hot start to March, large parts of India witnessed a sudden shift to thunderstorms, hailstorms, and widespread rainfall in the third week of the month, bringing significant relief from soaring temperatures.

Early Heatwave Conditions

Regions including Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra experienced sweltering heat at the beginning of March—unusual for a month that typically marks a gradual transition from winter to summer.

Sudden Weather Reversal

By the third week, the heat gave way to severe weather conditions including:

  • Thunderstorms and lightning
  • Hailstorms
  • Short but intense rainfall spells (over 115 mm in 24 hours)
  • Snowfall in higher altitudes

These events impacted the western Himalayas, eastern and northeastern India, and even parts of southern India. Neighboring Pakistan also reported similar extreme weather.

Key Meteorological Factors

According to the India Meteorological Department, the unusual weather pattern was driven by a combination of factors:

  1. Western Disturbances
    • Moisture-laden systems originating near Afghanistan and Iran
    • Gain moisture from seas like the Mediterranean, Black, Caspian, and Arabian Sea
    • Move eastward, bringing rain and snowfall to north and northwest India
  2. Cyclonic Circulation
    • Persistent low-level cyclonic circulation enhanced atmospheric instability
  3. Moisture Incursion
    • Strong south-westerly winds carried moisture from the Bay of Bengal
  4. Wind Confluence
    • Interaction of moist winds with cold air over central and northwest India intensified storms

Regional Weather Phenomena

  • In eastern India, local storms known as Nor’westers (Kalbaisakhi) contributed to sudden intense weather activity.
  • The convergence of moist and cold winds led to widespread hailstorms across a large geographical area.
