GS1 signs MoU with Government eMarketplace

  • GS1 India, a standards organisation set up by the commerce and industry ministry on February 16, 2019 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Government eMarketplace (GeM).
  • According to the ministry of commerce and industry, the MoU will enable GeM’s buyers and vendors to access accurate and standardised information on attributes of thousands of products across categories, empowering them to make more informed decisions.
  • GeM 1 will access product data from GS1 India’s DataKart, the national repository of information on attributes of millions of retail products in the country.

About GS 1 India

  • GS 1 India is a not-for-profit standards organisation, set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, along with CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, FIEO, IMC, BIS, Spices Board, APEDA, and IIP. It helps Industry in adopting global GS1 standards in their supply chains to enhance efficiency and profitability.
  • GS1 standards facilitate unique and universal identification, capture and share of information on products and services, from point-of-origin to point-of-sale or dispensation.

About DataKart

  • DataKart is a repository of information on Indian retailed products with details of each attribute (ingredient, product image, MRP, net content, dimension etc). It enables brand owners to share accurate, trusted, and updated SKU data with retailers/e-tailers in a consistent, structured, and standardised manner, in real time

About GS 1

  • GS1 is a not-for-profit, industry-led global organisation headquartered in Brussels and oversees operations of 112 GS1 Organisations across the world.
  • Over two million companies, across 25 industry sectors such as Retail, Healthcare, Transport and Logistics use GS1 standards. The majority of GS1 standards are endorsed and referenced in ISO standards.
  • Gs1 introduced the barcode in 1974. On 26 June 1974, a packet of chewing gum became the first barcoded product to be scanned in store.
