FAO 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development

Why in News?

Z T Lalrithangi, popularly known as Pi Mari-i, a 35-year-old teacher-turned-farmer from Sangau village in Lawngtlai district, Mizoram, has been selected among the “FAO 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development.” She will receive the recognition at the World Food Forum at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome from 12–16 October 2026.

She was selected from more than 600 women nominated from 131 countries and is one of two women from India to receive the recognition. The award is being given as part of the International Year of Women Farmers 2026.

About Z T Lalrithangi

Lalrithangi began experimenting with strawberry cultivation in 2024 after learning about successful strawberry farmers in neighbouring Siaha district. She subsequently developed strawberry cultivation into a profitable livelihood, demonstrating the potential of horticulture and innovative farming practices to create income opportunities in remote rural areas.

Her recognition highlights the role of women farmers in agricultural innovation, rural livelihoods, food systems and sustainable rural development, particularly in geographically remote regions.
