India–CELAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Why in News?

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar co-chaired the India–Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the sidelines of the high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting was attended by 30 CELAC members, making it the largest-ever participation in the India–CELAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. India and CELAC share an interest in ensuring a stronger voice for the Global South in shaping the international system.

About CELAC

The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) is a regional forum bringing together the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. It was created in February 2010 at the Latin American and Caribbean Summit (CALC) held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and was formally established at the Caracas Summit in Venezuela in December 2011.

CELAC provides a platform for regional dialogue and cooperation on political, economic, social and international issues. Unlike the Organization of American States (OAS), CELAC does not include the United States and Canada.

India–CELAC Relations

India and CELAC have expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, technology and development cooperation. Bilateral trade has crossed US$50 billion annually, although there remains considerable scope for further expansion.

The partnership also provides a platform for India and Latin American and Caribbean countries to coordinate on issues concerning the Global South, including reform of international institutions and strengthening developing countries’ participation in global decision-making.
