Why in News?

India highlighted its achievements in forest and landscape restoration and reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable forest management, climate action and resilient forest landscapes at the 28th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO 28), held from 28 September to 2 October 2026 at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. India welcomed FAO’s focus on Forest and Landscape Restoration and emphasised the role of sustainable forest management in addressing restoration at the landscape level while considering national circumstances and local community needs.

About Committee on Forestry (COFO)

The Committee on Forestry (COFO) is the highest global intergovernmental body of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on forestry. It provides strategic direction to FAO’s forestry programme and promotes international collaboration, policy dialogue and technical guidance on forest-related issues.

COFO brings together 128 Members and meets every two years, with participation from ministers, heads of forest services, senior government officials and partner organisations. Its sessions identify emerging challenges in forestry, promote innovative approaches and provide strategic guidance for addressing forest-related issues.
