First of it’s kind “Green Forge” Complex inaugurated at BRIC-NABI

Why in News?

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, inaugurated the first-of-its-kind “Green Forge” Complex at BRIC-NABI (National Agri-food & Biomanufacturing Institute), Mohali.

Key Features

  • Green Forge is a controlled-environment facility for research on genetically modified (GM) crops.
  • It contains simulation chambers where researchers can precisely vary light quantity and quality, temperature and humidity.
  • It enables scientists to recreate different environmental conditions and observe how GM crops respond.
  • Researchers can assess the suitability of a newly developed GM crop for different geographical locations before field-level cultivation.
  • It can help identify the optimum environmental conditions for crop growth, productivity and performance.
  • The facility is expected to support India’s agricultural biotechnology and GM crop research.
