First of it’s kind “Green Forge” Complex inaugurated at BRIC-NABI : GS TIMES IAS-PCS

Why in News?

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, inaugurated the first-of-its-kind “Green Forge” Complex at BRIC-NABI (National Agri-food & Biomanufacturing Institute), Mohali.

Key Features

Green Forge is a controlled-environment facility for research on genetically modified (GM) crops.
It contains simulation chambers where researchers can precisely vary light quantity and quality, temperature and humidity.
It enables scientists to recreate different environmental conditions and observe how GM crops respond.
Researchers can assess the suitability of a newly developed GM crop for different geographical locations before field-level cultivation.
It can help identify the optimum environmental conditions for crop growth, productivity and performance.
The facility is expected to support India’s agricultural biotechnology and GM crop research.
