Bihar and Jharkhand sign Sone River water sharing agreement

Why in News?

In the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bihar and Jharkhand signed an MoU on sharing the waters of the Son River, resolving a long-pending water dispute between the two States.

The agreement is expected to provide irrigation water to lakhs of farmers and improve drinking-water availability in rural areas of Bihar and Jharkhand.

About Sone River

• The Son (Sone) River is one of the major tributaries of the Ganga.
• It is notable as the principal peninsular tributary of the Ganga.
• Unlike several Himalayan tributaries of the Ganga, the Son is primarily a rain-fed river.
• Origin: Amarkantak Hills of the Maikal Range, at about 1,030 m elevation.
• Length: Approximately 784 km.
• It flows through Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar.
• It joins the Ganga near Patna, Bihar.
• Course of the River: Amarkantak Hills → Madhya Pradesh → Uttar Pradesh → Jharkhand → Bihar → Ganga near Patna .
  • After originating in Madhya Pradesh, it initially flows north–northwest.
  • It then turns sharply eastward.
  • The river encounters and subsequently runs broadly parallel to the Kaimur Range of the Vindhyan system.
  • It finally flows through Bihar before meeting the Ganga.
